Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic elective course that prepares students for college readiness and success, and it is scheduled during the regular school day as a year-long course. Each week, students receive instruction utilizing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum provided by AVID Center, tutor-facilitated study groups, motivational activities and academic success skills. In AVID, students participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to support their academic growth.

SEHS’ AVID Department is available by appointment to meet with students and parents to answer questions regarding the program’s requirements. Each student is required to maintain and present their binders, therefore these binders should be with the student at all times.

Please see below for the students’ expectations as an AVID student at South Elgin High School.

• 1) One 3-inch binder with pockets
• 2) One divider per academic class
• 3) One zipper pouch with holes to be secured in the student binder
• 4) Six pens (two black, two blue, two additional colored pens of student’s preference)
• 5) Twenty pieces of unused paper (may be composite, spiral, or five subject notebook)
• 6) SEHS’ Student Planner (or equivalent planner)
• 7) Two highlighters
• 8) One calculator

Cornell Note-Taking Expectations

Freshmen = 10 notes -- Sophomores = 15 notes -- Juniors = 18 notes -- Seniors = 20 notes

To receive credit per Cornell (individual) note, students must meet the following criteria:

1) Completed student heading (name, class, period, date)

2) Topic or Objective

3) Essential Question

4) A left line dividing the student’s study questions from their notes

5) Multiple questions written in the left column that can be answered by the notes on the right. Questions must be structured as potential quiz/test questions.

6) A three-four sentence summary
