What's Going on in AVID?
th - Freshmen are transitioning into high school (note-taking, study skills), starting to learn about colleges, self-exploration, goal-setting. Q2 was all about College and Career Readiness! We visited Rock Valley College on October 23 to hear from an admissions rep about the details and benefits of attending a community college. We also had the chance to visit several four-year universities at the college fair Rock Valley was hosting that day. We had a representative from Universal Training Institute speak to us about career opportunities in the trades. These experiences have helped us focus on the importance of grades and good work habits in preparing for our future. Next semester, we plan to visit St. Francis University.
th - Sophomores continue working on WICOR strategies while exploring various careers, colleges, and paths they can take after high school. Sophomores are also actively building relationships with teachers and staff, recognizing the importance of these connections for when they need letters of recommendation in their senior year. They are working hard to meet their GPA goals of 3.0 or higher, and they're contributing to the community by leading the Larkin team in the Salvation Army Bell Ringing competition. They attended the NEIU Preview Day on November 15th to provide further opportunities for students to explore college life, with a campus tour, admissions presentation, and lunch with college students. Our next college visit will be on February 7th to NIU.
th - Juniors are currently focused on their SAT practice as the test is quickly approaching. Students are taking practice tests, scoring their tests and assessing where and why their answers were incorrect. The juniors have been hard at work identifying potential career options and colleges that serve those careers. They are processing all the information and options presented during their overnight college tour and UIC. Juniors have also been volunteering at many local events to complete their required service hours for the semester.
th - Seniors are working on their college search, college applications, career search, and scholarships. Students have been receiving their college acceptance letters and National Decision Day is coming up on May 1st, in which our seniors will celebrate their post-secondary decision! Our senior AVID students are nearing the finish line, having applied to over 40 colleges! So far, they’ve received an impressive 24 acceptance letters and more than $554,000 in merit scholarship offers. Their hard work, perseverance, and resourcefulness have paved the way for bright futures, and they’re seizing every opportunity to secure their next steps! Also, so far, the Seniors can boast three Dell Scholars: Ashley Gonzalez, Alexis Berruquin, and Harold Nunez. Congratulations to these students!
