South Elgin High School Engine Teardown Team to Compete in National Competition

The South Elgin High School Hot Rodders of Tomorrow engine teardown team will face off against competitors from nine other schools across the nation for the title of fastest automotive engine teardown team at the Performance Racing Industry trade show in Indianapolis Dec. 12 through Dec. 14. The team qualified for a spot in the national top ten competition with an average engine teardown time of 26 minutes in November at the National Speed Equipment Manufacturing trade show in Las Vegas.
The team, sponsored by Jegs Performance Auto Parts, is led by South Elgin High automotive teacher Steve Schertz and coached by South Elgin 2016 alum LeeAnne Driscoll. Students on the team are senior Andrew Clark, senior Casey Gebala, senior Dan Godinez, senior Jared Pena, junior Hayden Shaw, and junior Omar Quiroz.
“We set out in October 2018 on our path to become the best team we could be,” said Schertz. “The students took a genuine interest in seeing how much they could push themselves. Their effort and sacrifice are what I am most proud to see.”
